The Tradition

Hockey Tie

The tradition of hockey players wearing ties to games grew out of the sport’s culture of discipline and professionalism. As organized teams developed in the early and mid-20th century, coaches began requiring players to arrive at arenas dressed formally—typically in a collared shirt, tie, and dress pants. The practice reinforced the idea that representing the team extended beyond the ice and encouraged players to carry themselves with pride and respect. By the time professional leagues like the National Hockey League became widely popular, the “game-day suit and tie” had become a recognizable part of hockey culture. Today many youth, junior, collegiate, and pro teams still maintain the tradition as a way to promote unity, professionalism, and team identity before stepping onto the ice.

How We Started

As a high school hockey coach I had a dress code for the players...a nice pair of slacks, collared shirt, and a tie. I know most of our players hated wearing a tie, and didn't much care for the "tradition" of dressing up when you arrive to the game...but they did it.

Years later as I attend games at local rinks and see some of my former players behind the bench, I notice that their team players wear ties to the game...so the tradition continues.

We have created a line of hockey specific custom neck ties that will hopefully  make wearing a tie to the hockey game a little less annoying  for a player and continue the tradition to future generations.
